Abstract
On Display at the NSU HPD Library
August 3rd - Sept 4th 2013
Harry Potter's World: Renaissance Science, Magic, and Medicine is a six-banner traveling exhibition created to explore the link between Harry Potter and the history of science using materials from the National Library of Medicine.
The Exhibit explores the world of Harry Potter and its roots in Renaissance magic, science, and medicine. In 1997, British author J.K. Rowling introduced the world to Harry Potter and a literary phenomenon was born. Although a fantasy story, the magic in the Harry Potter books is partially based on Renaissance traditions that played an important role in the development of Western science and medicine.

Harry Potter’s World
Grand Opening Reception
On Thursday August 8th 6:00pm – 8:00pm
The first reception of its kind at the Nova Southeastern University Health Professions Division (NSU HPD) Library, this Harry Potter’s World Grand Opening reception was a celebration in honor of the arrival of the National Library of Medicine’s traveling exhibition “Harry Potter’s World : Renaissance Science, Magic, and Medicine”. This exhibit will be on display at the NSU HPD Library until September 4th, 2013.
Eighty-eight (88) members of the NSU and local community came to enjoy the evening.
Besides spending time looking over the NLM exhibit there was a great deal of other fun and activities.
We had three (3) trivia contests located at our double-screened Mediascape in the alcove. Each winner of the contests won Amazon.com gift cards. All other participants were awarded fun multi-highlighters.
There was a Wii with a game that featured Harry Potter magical dueling. There was also a station that showed off a new computer user interface called the LEAP Motion. Where, just like magic, a user only needs to wave his/her hands to control the computer. http://www.leapmotion.com/
Ultimately, we had a costume contest and parade. The winner and runner-up each received Amanzon.com gift cards and other participants received USB drives.
We also had four door prizes, which were awarded to the lucky guests whose gift goodie bags were enchanted with the magic colors. These lucky wizards each got to take home Headmaster Snape’s homemade Magic Wands.
Meanwhile, the House Elves were busy serving up soft drinks, and food. All along our Hogwart’s banquet table there were bowls of fruit to compliment the feast. The buffet featured fresh made pita bread, mashed white and sweet potatoes. Chips, salsa, cheeses, meatballs, and a large assortment of dips and toppings for the tapas and potatoes. And don’t forget the cake and cookies! None of our wizards, witches, or muggles went home hungry that night.
We could not have done it without the help of our fifteen (15) NSU Staff, Faculty and Student volunteers. Additionally, this reception would not have gotten off the ground without the help of our NSU HPD Library administration and our five (5) vendor sponsors : OVID Technologies, McGraw-Hill, EBSCOHost, Lexi-Comp, and Elsevier Mosby’s Suite.
