Description
Today most online education is delivered asynchronously. This format seems to work well for both the instructor and the students, allowing any time, any place learning. The primary tool that is used for this asynchronous activity is threaded discussion boards or bulletin boards or forums. This presentation will explain the various ways the discussion boards have been used to enhance online learning in graduate level courses. The author has been using forums for many different purposes in her courses. She will discuss the evolution of her use of the forums, student reaction to the forums, structured versus unstructured forums, student run forums, increasing student participation in the forums, grading forum contributions, and how forum participation creates the learning community vital to online education.
