Abstract

The purpose of this dissertation project was two-fold. First, the purpose was to develop a textbook for the Acting I course at Austin Community College that fully supports the required standardized curriculum created in 1999. Second, an evaluation plan for the textbook was developed to help determine the text’s validity.

The effectiveness of the text will be determined by the implementation of this plan. Based on the results of the evaluation plan, the administration at Austin Community College will make a recommendation to either adopt the text as is, modify the text, or to reject the text.

There were three main research questions addressed in this study.

1. What are the essential criteria that must be included in the textbook for the Acting I course at ACC?

2. What was the most effective way to organize the textbook keeping in mind the required curriculum and its sequencing?

3. What were the evaluation methodologies needed to determine the worth of the textbook?

Development and evaluation methodologies were used to address the problem and answer the research questions. The study included two phases. The first phase was the development of the textbook. The second phase of the study was the evaluation of the textbook to determine its worth and validity at ACC. Recommendations are to be made by the administration at ACC to either adopt the proposed textbook, adopt the textbook with modifications, or to reject the textbook.
