Abstract

The primary purpose of this quasi-experimental study was to examine the effect of different strategies that would help (a) oral reading fluency (ORF) development, (b) the pattern of relationships between the pretest and posttest measures of oral reading fluency, and (c) reading comprehension of Grade 6 students who were reading below grade level and who were categorized as high risk of failure. Data collection for this study included a pretest and posttest using both the Maze and state ORF assessments.

The study was conducted for 12 weeks. Twelve students in the treatment group received a total of 12 hours simultaneous multiple components of timed readings, paired readings, repeated readings, repeated readings with recorded models, and computerized reading intervention. The treatment was 3 days per week for 20 minutes during the 3-day weekly 2-hour reading block. The results of the ORF and Maze pretest and posttest after the 12-week intervention was analyzed using a t test. The results indicated that the differences in the posttest scores were still not significantly different between the two groups.

After 12 weeks of multiple components of fluency development, the treatment group read an average of 60 words correct per minute. There was a decrease or increase of 5 words per minute. The control group averaged 20 words correct per minute which was a decrease of 9 words per minute.
