Abstract
Nurse managers at the Hospital for Joint Diseases (HJD) have not had any additional leadership development beyond their generic nursing education, or since they were head nurses, to effectively manage the nursing units. Prior to this study, HJD had no policies and procedures in place to support their development.
To address the problem, the writer developed an educational leadership program for nurse managers at HJD with a plan for implementation and evaluation. It was expected that such a program would expand the knowledge base and elevate the competency levels of the nurse managers.
Nineteen procedures that incorporated the developmental and evaluation methodologies and formative and summative processes were used to develop the product. The educational program that resulted from this study is a 1-year-long program that concentrates on integrating leadership roles and management functions.
The study concluded that the development of the program should be specific to the needs of the nurse managers and institution, derived from best practices, empirically supported, and tightly structured to ensure that the nurse managers are given enough time to develop or refine requisite leadership skills/techniques. Recommendations included implementation of the program, mandatory participation in the program, institution of an oversight committee to periodically review the program and its implementation and evaluation plan, and revision of the position description and the annual appraisal tool for the nurse manager.
