Abstract
Diversity continues to be a goal for X School District. Because federal appellate courts have changed the policy of assigning students based on race, a gap has been identified between limited-English-proficient students applying for admission to X School of the Arts in X School District. Factors that influence the number of African American and Hispanic students, who are limited-English- proficient students, applying for X School of the Arts has been examined.
The research for this applied dissertation is descriptive research utilizing archival data. The data were collected from the Magnet/Choice Student Assignment Program database of X School District, Magnet Schools of America.
The data were retrieved from the school years 1999-2000, 2000-2001, and 2001-2002. The data base for the lottery student assignment program does not archive student assignment data over three years. The three years reviewed provided demographic history of applicants of X School of the Arts.
The purpose of this applied dissertation was to identify interventions established by the school district that have become a part of the marketing and recruitment plan for X School of the Arts. These interventions have been monitored and measured throughout the application and recruitment process. Some of the interventions were used for the first time. The interventions that proved to be successful were recommended to X School District for inclusion as a permanent part of the magnet school marketing and recruitment plan.
