Abstract
This applied dissertation was designed to develop a human resources plan for the Alabama School of Fine Arts. Presently, the school does not have a unified plan which addresses the major areas of human resources: hiring, evaluation and retention. While the school did have some procedures in place dealing with the wide topic of human resources, it was not regarded as a particularly significant field.
In the past year ASFA has become an independent school system. This new status presents the opportunity to create and implement policies and procedures which will enable the school to select, rate and reward its faculty and staff according to the best practices in the fields of education and business to improve the overall mission of the school.
Surveys and interviews revealed that there was a need for a comprehensive plan concerning human resources at ASFA. Three components of such a plan, interviews, evaluation and motivation, were developed as an initial endeavor into the creation of an HR plan.
The overall success of the human resources plan requires more time to determine, however, initial response has been overwhelmingly positive. The motivation component, the Ovation Program, has proved popular and beneficial to the faculty and staff thus far. The evaluation protocol needs refining to make it more adaptable to the specific needs of the school and there has not been – as yet – an opportunity to audition the interview protocol.
