Abstract

There had been a continuing problem with violence on the campus of Bradwell Institute (BI). Efforts had been made to reduce the number of incidents, and, although improvements were realized, the situation was still not acceptable. Parent and community involvement were key components of the implementation. Peer court and conflict resolution programs were continued and enhanced, and a Watch D.O.G.S. (T. Moore, 1998) program was initiated.

There were 3 terminal objectives: (a) The number of incidents of BI students fighting on campus will decrease by at least 20% as measured by a comparison of reported incidents of fighting prior to and after this intervention, (b) the number of BI students arrested for committing violent acts on campus will decrease by at least 20% as indicated by a comparison of such arrests prior to and after the implementation of this intervention, and (c) the number of incidents of nonstudents coming on campus for the purpose of causing problems will decrease by at least 25% as indicated by a comparison of reports of arrests for incidents prior to and after implementation of this intervention. Objective 1 was not met. Objectives 2 and 3 were met.

In addition, fathers served in the Watch D.O.G.S. Program. These fathers were monitoring the bus ramp and monitoring the campus during lunch hours. The fathers were there as a means of security first but also served as mentors for BI students. After school, the fathers were placed in the parking lot to make sure that no one entered the parking lot without a student identification.
