Abstract
The authors reflect on the physical benefit of low-risk drinking to recover from alcohol problems in the U.S. They attribute the remainder of low-risk drinking as a closet treatment goal to the refusal of clinicians to this evidence, notwithstanding research on their common occurrence. They note arguments that accepting low-risk drinking goal may lead to casualties such as the attempt of abstinent individuals to drink and the search of heavy drinkers to lessen rather than cease drinking.
