Description

The discussion board of a learning management system (LMS) is an ideal site for asynchronous online collaboration, a process typically described as working together, particularly on a joint intellectual exercise. The problem is that much of what needs to be learned, at any level, is not an intellectual exercise. Some examples of non-intellectual subject matter are calculus, anatomy, and the multiplication table. Collaborating online is largely a matter of discussion, hence the name of the board. Engagement is the other issue to be addressed; it refers to being involved, to being committed to a process or entity. Engaged students are those who are actively involved with that which is taking place within a course. A marriage engagement refers to two people who agree to be actively involved with one another. So there we have them, collaboration and engagement, the subjects of this editorial.
