Abstract

"Just as children cannot be separated into segments for social, emotional, physical or intellectual development, so too content cannot be presented as separate and discreet subject matter....The learning experiences in a unit of study allow children the opportunity to learn concepts as parts of an integrated whole, rather than isolated bits and pieces of information under a particular content area" (Raines & Canady, 1990, p. 12). Thus, when instruction is presented in a holistic manner, children view it as a relevant part of their lives. This paper details how teachers can create integrated, holistic lessons using writing activities that are relevant, engaging and appropriate across the curriculum.
