Abstract

Drawing on Barkhuizen’s positioning analysis framework (2009), we investigate how a non- native speaking (NNS) in-service English teacher’s professional identity is performed in and conditioned by discourses connected to education. We extracted two small stories from an interview to understand her professional identity construction in situations where her identity is questioned. This study suggests that small story analysis is crucial to bottom-up approaches in understanding power in discourse.
