Abstract

A phenomenological study was done on former ER nurses in their sixth decade. A deductive approach was used to investigate sources of secondary traumatic stress that may have impacted these nurses, their careers and personal lives. Interviews were done; data was taped, transcribed, and analyzed. The nurses in this study described their continuous feelings of danger in ordinary things, and hyper-vigilance related to the uncontrolled chaos and unexpected events which occurred in the ER.
