Abstract
Recent research further demonstrates potential of cord blood stem cells. In recent months, umbilical cord blood has been a main topic in the national news, both because it is a readily available, non-controversial source of stem cells for research and because it is a life-saving alternative to bone marrow for transplantation. As more information surfaces, health care providers have an obligation to familiarize themselves with the life-saving potential of cord blood stem cells and to understand the various preservation and donation options available today. Education will allow us to better advise our patients on what cord blood stem cell preservation may one day mean to their families.
