Abstract
Asynchronous, written communication presents two learning curves with different degrees of steepness for different people. The first deals with sending and receiving messages with indefinite time lags. The second addresses expressing oneself succinctly in writing and reading expression into the written words of others. Proficiency in both skills improves with practice. This paper describes two experiences in which professionals sharpened their online communication skills working in small online communities. Practice was based upon a foundation of relevant literature.
