Abstract
Every few years, a new technology appears on the education stage that promises to educate many, minus the labor-intensive teacher/facilitator. Unions protest, teachers shiver, money is invested, and soon the whole thing quiets down. Programmed instruction promised to replace teachers and improve learning at the same time. Computer-based learning made the same promises, as did its networked spin-off web-based learning. The fact is that a great deal may be learned from all technologies: correspondence, books, radio, video, CDs, television, the Internet and more. Field trips provide excellent content. No one should disparage the learning opportunities afforded to all people at all times from multiple sources.
