Description
I participated in the esteemed Pre-Health Professional Volunteer Program at Penn Medicine Princeton Health over this summer from May to August. Through this program, I was able to rotate through various departments in the hospital ranging from – but not limited to – Radiation Oncology to the Pathology/Blood Bank Lab. Along with completing my rotations, I was a part of a close-knit cohort that was able to attend special lectures dedicated to a variety of healthcare topics such as medical treatment inequality and disparity, EMS services, organ donation, and medical examiner (autopsy) recognition cases. Despite being part of a specialized program I was still allowed the opportunity to fulfill my role as a regular volunteer. There are multiple departments you have the chance to volunteer in, but I was placed in the Emergency Department and the Telemetry Unit (cardiac unit). While the rotations were exciting and adventurous volunteering aided me in improving my bedside manners as I helped to serve and discharge patients while also learning how day-to-day tasks in a hospital are run and how important it is to be dedicated in providing the best care possible to all people who walk through the hospital doors seeking aid.
