Abstract

The Peace Process between the National Government of Colombia and the FARC

Abstract

The internal conflict between the national Colombian government and the Revolutionary Forces of Colombia (FARC) has persisted for over a half a century. However, since the election of Juan Manuel Santos as president of Colombia in 2012, there is a glimmer of hope in Colombia. After four years of negotiation, in Havana, Cuba between the Colombian Government and the FARC a peace deal was signed to end the social conflict in Colombia. The implementation of the agreement requires not only political decision but also the participation and will of Colombian citizens.

This study aims to hear and understand the voices of Colombians in Miami regarding the peace deal. A qualitative approach was used to explore this phenomenon. Participants were interviewed using semi-structured interview protocol. The data was collected and subsequently coded using NVivo. Finding showed that Colombian democracy is perceived as solid and strong, but it lacks channels of participation. In addition, Colombians express apathy and are suspicious towards their institutions, therefore, towards the implementation of the peace deal. The study also showed the need to reconstruct and strengthen the judicial system. Finally, Colombia not only experienced a social conflict, but it is also a political conflict.
