Abstract

The authors describe how qualitative methods can be used to examine the outcomes of a second/foreign language (L2) program in Mexico. The researchers argue that qualitative methods offer a better understanding of the processes and perspectives of multiple stakeholders in the program. The researchers present the case of the Programa Nacional de Inglés en Educación Básica (PNIEB), Mexico’s recently implemented national program for English in public primary schools. The presenters explain how the program was studied in one state, how the study was designed, and how data were collected and analyzed. They conclude by discussing the relative merits and limitations of qualitative methodologies for studying language education programs.
