The Gut Microbiome and Alzheimer’s Disease

Abstract

Alzheimer’s Disease’s pathophysiology and pathogenesis are still poorly understood despite being one of the most researched neurocognitive diseases. This review examines a new area of research that explores the link between the gut microbiome and Alzheimer’s Disease pathology. Potential treatments and therapeutic interventions stemming from microbiome research are discussed as well. Overall, while the research so far is promising, the literature in this area is still in its infancy, and there is much to be done to establish a causal role between microbiome dysbiosis and AD pathology. Moreover, assuming that microbiome research continues to support new models of AD, implications for the field are discussed.
