Description
Pedro Hernandez is a leading Cuban sculptor mostly known for his work in wood. Active since the 1950s, he was closely associated with other leading Cuban artists including Cuban Vanguard leader Victor Manuel. He is included in several books of notable Cuban artists in exile and has won international awards as well as secured public art commissions for his sculptural work. In 2013 he became the subject of the book Pedro Hernández: Line in Movement, his first career monograph.
His work has been covered by leading international art critics and exhibited widely throughout the United States, Europe, and Latin America. He is included in Cuba’s National Museum of Fine Arts of Havana as well as the Museum of Geometric and MADI Art.
Though known primarily as a sculptor, Hernandez is also known for the innovative development of the “Cut Drawings” in 1979, made using layers of cut construction paper in forms that are recognizably of his Biomophic style alongside his sculptures. This shows his strength in crafting forms across mediums, even in two dimensions without the use of paint.
This piece is one of his Cut Drawings and nods to Hernandez’s many travels across the world, and specifically evokes the pyramids of Egypt.
