After dedicating 26 years of his life to the creation of Nova University — 22 of them as president — Dr. Abraham S. Fischler stepped down from Nova University, having served since 1970. But his inspiration and guidance date from 1966, the year he joined the University as dean of graduate studies.
Dr. Fischler's commitment to the pursuit of knowledge and educational excellence is evident from his distinguished career, which includes professorships at the University of California at Berkeley and the Graduate School of Education of Harvard University. He also has taught science at the secondary school level.
He earned his bachelor's degree from the College of the City of New York, his master's degree in science education from New York University, and his doctorate in education from Columbia University.
A leader in the field of education, Dr. Fischler has served as consultant to the Ford Foundation, to various state departments of education, and to many school districts. He is the author of numerous articles, textbooks, and other publications dealing with science education and advanced teaching methods. A fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, he also belongs to many other educational, scientific, and civic organizations.
A pioneer in the development of inquiry-based science curricula and individualized instruction, Dr. Fischler also has been instrumental in promoting innovative educational delivery methods and selfpaced instruction at Nova. He has nurtured Nova's growth into Florida's second-largest independent university. He has, indeed, made a difference-and leaves behind a legacy without compare.
