Abstract
Despite being widely used as sugar alternatives, artificial sweeteners (AS), especially aspartame, remains debated regarding their potential effects on mental health. While some studies suggest aspartame has no discernible impact on stress, anxiety, or cognitive performance, others indicate that it may affect serotonin pathways and contribute to mood disorders. Given these contradictory findings, further research is needed to clarify aspartame’s effect on mood regulation. This study aims to evaluate the impact of aspartame on stress-related biomarkers and mood modulation, focusing on individuals with anxiety. A controlled experimental design will be used, in which participants with anxiety will be randomly assigned to either an experimental group consuming aspartame or a control group consuming a placebo. To minimize bias, participants will be blind to their group assignment. Neurophysiological markers, including heart rate variability (HRV) and electroencephalography (EEG), will be measured at baseline, during, and after consumption to track changes in stress response and brainwave activity. HRV will assess autonomic stress regulation, while EEG will examine brainwave patterns linked to mood modulation. Additionally, validated anxiety scales will measure psychological responses. Anticipated outcomes will provide insight into aspartame’s effect on mood regulation, particularly in individuals with anxiety. If notable impacts are found, findings may inform dietary guidelines and public health policies pertaining to AS intake. Conversely, if no effects are found, this study may help alleviate concerns about aspartame’s effects on mental health. This aims to advance the knowledge of aspartame’s neurobehavioral effects, helping people make better dietary choices that can impact mental health.
