Abstract

This applied dissertation was designed to examine teachers ‘and administrators’ perceptions about bullying in a high school district and what measures can be taken in the future to prevent and report bullying incidents. This study attempted to identify critical information that teachers deem significant when reporting bullying incidents and offer guidance on bullying prevention.

The researcher gathered information in an effort to provide awareness to assist teachers and administrators with resources on how to confront and prevent any forms of bullying in school. The aim of this study was to increase programs for teachers and students to have a better understanding of the effect that bullying has on students and the behavior patterns among students who are bullies or students being bullied. Participants were asked open-ended questions to gain a better understanding of their perceptions and the phenomenon that is connected to this study.

The findings of this study address the impact of bullying on the students’ lives, both within and outside the classroom, in an attempt to make a positive social change. These findings suggest that more professional development training be offered that provides actionable strategies that a teacher can implement in the classroom. The findings recommend more ongoing and enhanced awareness of the school's current anti-bullying program. Future studies must continue to conduct longitudinal studies to assess the impact of various bullying prevention programs and identify which elements have lasting effects on reducing bullying in schools.
