Short Description

Creating a consistent design with over 30 instructional designers that are developing over 1,000 courses can be a challenge. At FIU Online, we encountered this issue early on. Feedback from learners showed us that the lack of consistency made it difficult for them to navigate their courses and many standards of ADA compliance fell through the cracks as IDs struggled to keep up with their high workloads.

Abstract

Have you struggled with achieving a consistent look and feel for your curriculum? Are you running into problems with ADA compliance? … We sure have. FIU is Miami's largest university with 50,000 students and 1,100 full-time faculty. FIU is Worlds Ahead in its commitment to learning, research, entrepreneurship, innovation and creativity. Nearly half of FIU students – over 25,000 – took online classes in the 2012 academic year, and more than 300 faculty taught online classes. FIU Online uses the latest in innovative technology to offer courses that are highly interactive, engaging and academically rigorous. Our exceptional online learning experience was ranked #3 in Student Services and Technology – Top Online Bachelor's Programs in U.S. News & World Reports for 2012.

In this session, you will learn to (1) Identify the benefits of implementing a Master Template for your Instructional Designers and for your learners; (2) Identify the importance of using a Master Template to target ADA compliance; (3) Discover innovative ideas to apply a Master Template in your course design; and (4) Discuss ideas to create your own Master Template.

Through the use of a Master Template, you not only increase efficiency in development, you ensure consistent verbiage and design across all courses, even if you have many instructional designers working on design. From the learners’ perspective, navigating these courses becomes second-nature as they enter a familiar environment, allowing the content to take center stage.
