Abstract

In this session, a case study detailing how Florida International University (FIU), a large, public research university in Miami implemented a recognition program that empowered faculty to adopt low-cost and Open Educational Resources to save students money. This program is called Affordability Counts. Just over a year after implementation, 150 courses have been awarded the Affordability Counts Medallion; this designation ensures students that the course materials will be under $60. This program serves multiple purposes, it recognizes faculty who have taken active steps to reduce the cost of materials, it serves as a searchable database for other faculty to discover low-cost materials and it provides students an affordable course to take. Intended audience: higher education administrators, instructional designers, librarians.
