Abstract

As students continue to struggle with mathematics a new innovative approach needs to be taken in the way students learn. SKIES allows the student to learn math in a collaborative environment where students are engaged and not afraid to ask questions. Students are using there own devices, and following a stem curriculum. The NCTM standards are being met to the highest degree both inside and outside the classroom, and students are actively learning and constructing their own knowledge.

Presenter(s) Biography

My name is Nadine Anderson and I am in the proposal stage of my dissertation. I plan to graduate in the spring with a degree in ITDE. I have a specialist degree in mathematics, and a master’s degree in elementary education all from Nova Southeastern University. I recently published my first article in Distance Learning for educators, trainers, and leaders on Plato credit recovery programs for meeting promotional and graduation requirements, and have currently finished another article on math and constructivism to submit for publication.

I have spent 10 years teaching mathematics in middle school as an eighth grade teacher until this year when I moved up to high school as an Algebra 1 teacher. Almost half of my students are retaking algebra 1 for a second time and are still trying to pass the EOC. The foundation of my research is the teaching and learning of math utilizing technology in a way that allows the student to not fear math in a collaborative environment. Students can ask questions in a real time atmosphere utilizing technology through BYOD without the fear of feeling stupid and the teacher can respond instantaneously. Teaching math is taken to a whole new level.
