Replies to criticisms by I. Maltzman (see record 1985-15573-001) of a study of controlled drinking vs abstinence in the treatment of alcoholism conducted by the authors (1978). The methods of Maltzman's attack on the authors' research are discussed, and evidence for an ideological controversy is presented.
