WEBVTT 1 00:00:09.690 --> 00:00:19.350 Jamie Segno: Welcome to today's session, my name is Jamie Segno, and I am one of the reference Librarians here at the Alvin Sherman Library. 2 00:00:19.830 --> 00:00:27.180 Jamie Segno: And I am also an instructor for Nova Southeastern University's first year experience course. 3 00:00:27.690 --> 00:00:43.020 Jamie Segno: And in that course we teach our students about all of the different academic resources that are here to help support them, and what we're going to do today is talk about some of those resources. I'm going to point out the different 4 00:00:44.940 --> 00:00:51.000 Jamie Segno: tools that you have available through the library and other units on campus and these tools are available to 5 00:00:52.050 --> 00:01:09.360 Jamie Segno: to students and much of it is also available to our general community as well. So, we're going to go ahead and get started, taking a look at different success strategies to help you ace your upcoming finals through the lens of the different resources that you have available to you. 6 00:01:11.550 --> 00:01:23.670 Jamie Segno: So, of course as a librarian, I have to start with talking about our different library resources that are available through our library databases. 7 00:01:25.650 --> 00:01:44.490 Jamie Segno: And to get to the library databases, you would go to the library's homepage, and so I have the link at the very bottom of this screen and you would click on the side, where it says databases by name, and then you would go to test practice and online tutorials. 8 00:01:45.630 --> 00:01:47.010 Jamie Segno: In this category, 9 00:01:48.210 --> 00:02:01.290 Jamie Segno: you're going to see a variety of databases that we have available to you that are a little different than some of the library databases you're more familiar with when you're looking for scholarly articles for a research assignment that you're working on. 10 00:02:01.890 --> 00:02:13.800 Jamie Segno: The databases in this category are ones that offer tutorials, self-paced trainings that can help you improve different skill sets that you want to enhance. 11 00:02:14.220 --> 00:02:21.480 Jamie Segno: And my two favorite databases in this category are Learning Express and Linkedin Learning. 12 00:02:22.350 --> 00:02:32.010 Jamie Segno: And whenever you're looking at the library's database list, you always want to pay attention to the little icon that has a house icon and then look at 13 00:02:32.370 --> 00:02:37.110 Jamie Segno: the words next to the house to see who has remote access from home. 14 00:02:37.590 --> 00:02:54.300 Jamie Segno: And of course in this example, both of these databases that I'm showing today can be accessed from home for NSU students faculty and staff, as well as our Broward County library card holders that have the NSU Alvin Sherman library card. 15 00:02:55.440 --> 00:03:05.070 Jamie Segno: So on a database page you'll see the link to the database has a short description that tells you the content, what you can expect to find within that database. 16 00:03:05.430 --> 00:03:18.150 Jamie Segno: Usually everyone will have access to the database when they're inside the library building and then, if you look at that home or house icon and see Broward listed, then you know you have access remotely as well. 17 00:03:19.440 --> 00:03:35.850 Jamie Segno: Now, when you click on one of those links to the databases you're going to see a login screen that looks like this. If you are a NSU student, faculty or staff, you will use this first blue box and you'll log in with your shark link username and password. 18 00:03:36.480 --> 00:03:42.150 Jamie Segno: And if you are one of our public patrons you will use your Alvin Sherman library card number 19 00:03:42.600 --> 00:03:49.890 Jamie Segno: and your last name and just keep in mind that this is a different library card than the one used by Broward County libraries. 20 00:03:50.190 --> 00:03:57.330 Jamie Segno: But if you don't have our card, you can get it for free. On our library's homepage, there's a link where you can 21 00:03:57.960 --> 00:04:08.790 Jamie Segno: fill out your online application and then you can either get the e-card that will allow you to use the databases remotely or you can stop in the library to pick up your physical card, if you prefer that. 22 00:04:10.140 --> 00:04:19.410 Jamie Segno: The reason why you log into these databases is because the content within them is not freely available. Usually, you'll have to have some sort of subscription. 23 00:04:19.740 --> 00:04:26.730 Jamie Segno: And, rather than requiring you to have to pay for a personal subscription, you can access it through the library free of charge. 24 00:04:27.180 --> 00:04:33.810 Jamie Segno: And that just means that you have to go through our library login in order to get to that actual platform. 25 00:04:34.380 --> 00:04:48.060 Jamie Segno: Once you're logged into these databases, you will then be prompted to create your own personal username and password, which will allow you to use those databases for your personal use. 26 00:04:48.390 --> 00:04:58.110 Jamie Segno: And it has different types of features where it can save where you left off, if you want to continue later or if you want to track your progress. In Linkedin Learning, you could earn 27 00:04:58.410 --> 00:05:09.810 Jamie Segno: a certificate of achievement when you complete one of their tutorial courses and so you have that personal profile available to you once you've gone past the library login step. 28 00:05:12.030 --> 00:05:23.130 Jamie Segno: Once you're in the database there's a lot of great features that I want to point out - specifically ones that would help you as you're preparing for your finals and just in general, as you 29 00:05:24.450 --> 00:05:42.690 Jamie Segno: succeed in college and beyond. The first one is Learning Express Prep Step, and so I have a screenshot of the welcome page (once you pass the login screen) and you can see that this database offers all kinds of different tutorials. 30 00:05:44.130 --> 00:05:52.740 Jamie Segno: Do check our recorded workshop area because there are other workshops that highlight some of the different elements like career preparation and things like that. 31 00:05:53.250 --> 00:06:07.830 Jamie Segno: Today, we're going to focus on the College Success Skills tutorials. When I click on that category, a menu pops up that tells me the types of skills that I can find and I highly recommend that if it's 32 00:06:08.880 --> 00:06:15.270 Jamie Segno: been a while since you've been in school, you take a look at some of these tutorials because they give some really helpful tips. 33 00:06:15.660 --> 00:06:27.060 Jamie Segno: And what I really like about this database is that it's very succinct so they get straight to the point and it's not overwhelming and it's not a daunting task to go through all these tutorials. 34 00:06:27.960 --> 00:06:38.250 Jamie Segno: When I click on one of the tutorials as an example, let's say I clicked on classroom success skills, I then see the different tutorials that are within that category. 35 00:06:38.730 --> 00:06:46.830 Jamie Segno: And it's pretty easy to self navigate. You click on the start tutorial button and it'll take you through the different sessions. 36 00:06:49.080 --> 00:06:56.430 Jamie Segno: If I clicked on the session called getting organized, you see an example of what the tutorial looks like. 37 00:06:57.360 --> 00:07:04.830 Jamie Segno: Unlike Linkedin Learning, which we will look at in a moment, this one is more text-based, instead of video tutorials. 38 00:07:05.490 --> 00:07:11.430 Jamie Segno: So if you have different preferences and you feel like reading through, this might be your preference to use this database. 39 00:07:12.210 --> 00:07:22.800 Jamie Segno: I specifically chose to highlight this page for our workshop today, because these are some really great tips 40 00:07:23.130 --> 00:07:30.870 Jamie Segno: to help you succeed in your classes. So, again we're going to look at some of these success tips through the lens of the resources that you have available. 41 00:07:31.110 --> 00:07:39.270 Jamie Segno: So if you were using Learning Express and you went to the tutorial on getting organized, there's a section that talks about your syllabus 42 00:07:39.570 --> 00:07:52.650 Jamie Segno: listing your assignments for your courses. So, I can't stress this enough, I always tell my students, the first day of class read through your syllabus that is going to be your roadmap for that specific course. 43 00:07:53.070 --> 00:07:58.560 Jamie Segno: And it should have all of the major things you need to know, such as any required readings. 44 00:07:59.760 --> 00:08:04.980 Jamie Segno: It's going to have an explanation of your assignments, and probably most importantly when those assignments are due. 45 00:08:07.020 --> 00:08:10.050 Jamie Segno: Depending how many courses, you are taking each semester, 46 00:08:10.860 --> 00:08:17.070 Jamie Segno: I always recommend to my students (as you see in this tutorial) to create yourself a master calendar. 47 00:08:17.400 --> 00:08:30.630 Jamie Segno: Go through the syllabus for each class and start putting in one calendar all of the deadlines that are coming up so you'll be able to at a glance look at what you have coming for the week or the month. 48 00:08:31.020 --> 00:08:36.540 Jamie Segno: And you could start to prepare ahead of time, knowing that these things are going to be due soon. 49 00:08:36.960 --> 00:08:46.590 Jamie Segno: And you'll find that when you make this master calendar you'll see a lot of patterns, you may notice that a couple of your courses all seem to have assignments due around the same time. 50 00:08:46.860 --> 00:08:59.790 Jamie Segno: And so that's going to be part of how you want to strategize how you want to prepare for those upcoming deadlines, because you might not be able to study the day before an exam if you have three exams that day. 51 00:09:00.390 --> 00:09:04.440 Jamie Segno: You might need to start studying that weekend before or maybe earlier. 52 00:09:05.130 --> 00:09:14.250 Jamie Segno: And then I also remind my students to set alerts, because once you plan this master calendar and you put it away because maybe you don't have too much going on right now, 53 00:09:15.000 --> 00:09:22.650 Jamie Segno: it's easy for things to sneak up on you, so I like to set reminders so that I know when something's going to be due. 54 00:09:23.130 --> 00:09:33.720 Jamie Segno: And I also recommend setting reminders for different phases of the project itself so maybe you have a paper that you need to write, well, you might want to 55 00:09:34.230 --> 00:09:48.930 Jamie Segno: set a reminder two weeks before it's due to complete your first draft, or to make an appointment with a librarian so you can find out how to find articles that you need to reference and cite in that paper you're writing. 56 00:09:49.590 --> 00:09:58.110 Jamie Segno: And then maybe you want to set another reminder the following week to follow up with the Writing Center to see if they can help proofread with you and 57 00:09:58.680 --> 00:10:10.380 Jamie Segno: give you any tips on any revisions, you might want to make, and then you might want to send that final reminder, so that you know that your assignment is due, and you submit it on time. 58 00:10:11.580 --> 00:10:20.670 Jamie Segno: And pay attention to, not just the deadline dates but the timestamp because some professors might give you until 59 00:10:21.120 --> 00:10:33.840 Jamie Segno: 11:59pm that day something is due, and some professors might say by 5pm. So, you want to make sure that you're not going to lose points or risk getting your assignment not accepted if it's late. 60 00:10:36.480 --> 00:10:49.170 Jamie Segno: So those are some tips that I took out of our Learning Express database. The next database I want to share is Linkedin Learning, and this is a much more video tutorial based 61 00:10:51.810 --> 00:10:52.740 Jamie Segno: platform. 62 00:10:53.430 --> 00:11:07.980 Jamie Segno: And it's similar in the respect that you can see all the different topics that you have. You could browse different areas or at the very top, you could do a search, if you are looking for something in particular and you want to see if there's a course or tutorial. 63 00:11:08.400 --> 00:11:13.470 Jamie Segno: In Linkedin Learning, what I really like about this database is that a lot of the 64 00:11:15.210 --> 00:11:24.090 Jamie Segno: let's say hour long courses - most, actually all of them - are usually broken into smaller segments like five minute segments. 65 00:11:24.360 --> 00:11:35.070 Jamie Segno: So you can watch just that five minutes on this piece that you really need or you can watch the longer course and bookmark/save where you left off. 66 00:11:35.850 --> 00:11:44.880 Jamie Segno: On the upper right corner you'll see that you do have your own personal login again once you're logged in through the library, so you could save your progress. 67 00:11:45.180 --> 00:11:53.640 Jamie Segno: You could go to your my learning section to see which courses you've completed, and if you've received any type of certificate for completing those courses. 68 00:11:54.870 --> 00:12:03.360 Jamie Segno: You can also change the language, there are quite a few courses in other languages, so you can change the language and see what's available to you. 69 00:12:04.410 --> 00:12:11.940 Jamie Segno: On the next page, let's say you pick one of the courses - in this case I just did a search for Canvas so let's pretend is my first semester 70 00:12:12.210 --> 00:12:20.640 Jamie Segno: at NSU and I know that I need to use Canvas to access all of my course materials and I'm not familiar with Canvas. 71 00:12:21.000 --> 00:12:33.270 Jamie Segno: Well, that is just one example of the courses that you can find in Linkedin Learning. They're all provided by expert instructors and there's usually some variety, so if you 72 00:12:34.140 --> 00:12:45.570 Jamie Segno: are watching one course and it's just not grasping you the way you hoped it would, you could look through the results and pick one by another instructor and see if it's the one that you feel 73 00:12:47.130 --> 00:12:55.980 Jamie Segno: relates to you best. And, on the left hand side, we have an example of the video that you can watch. 74 00:12:56.220 --> 00:13:08.970 Jamie Segno: So you'll see on the left hand side there is the table of contents, so this course is broken down into smaller snippets and you could skip around and you can save the ones that you want to go back to where you left off. 75 00:13:09.870 --> 00:13:16.740 Jamie Segno: In the center, you'll see the actual video that plays and it has your navigation tools. It has 76 00:13:17.430 --> 00:13:27.060 Jamie Segno: the ability to change the speed, if you want to watch a little faster, it has closed captioning, and you can adjust your volume so it's a really great 77 00:13:27.900 --> 00:13:37.710 Jamie Segno: platform and it's very user friendly. There's an overview of what the class is about, there's a Q and A section, 78 00:13:38.340 --> 00:13:49.950 Jamie Segno: a notebook if you want to jot down some notes as you go, and then you can view the transcript as well, if you want to read the transcript as the video is playing. 79 00:13:50.700 --> 00:14:03.240 Jamie Segno: And then it'll tell you if there is a certificate available at the end so, not just for your courses, but even in your careers, if you want to improve some of your business skills like 80 00:14:04.650 --> 00:14:14.970 Jamie Segno: public speaking, creating an Excel spreadsheet, anything that you can really think of, you could search to see if there's a course in here, and then it would be a great 81 00:14:16.380 --> 00:14:23.430 Jamie Segno: advantage to complete the course and list that certificate that you received on a resume. 82 00:14:25.680 --> 00:14:42.000 Jamie Segno: In this particular screenshot, I purposely chose the portion of the video where they talk about setting up notifications in Canvas since we just talked about looking at your Syllabi seeing when those deadlines are coming up and plotting them out and a master 83 00:14:43.020 --> 00:14:58.200 Jamie Segno: calendar. Related to that, I'm not sure if you all know that you have the ability in your settings in Canvas to set up notifications, and they offer you email or text message notifications for things like 84 00:14:58.800 --> 00:15:06.090 Jamie Segno: deadlines when a due date has been entered, or if your a professor has posted an announcement and you want to be notified. 85 00:15:06.540 --> 00:15:16.710 Jamie Segno: I always recommend to my students that these notifications will help you if you're not regularly checking this Canvas course and you're worried that you might miss out on something, and you have 86 00:15:18.390 --> 00:15:28.680 Jamie Segno: duration of how frequently you want to receive these so maybe you want to get it once a day, maybe you want to get it every time something is posted so you can set those 87 00:15:29.700 --> 00:15:39.780 Jamie Segno: settings for yourself. In our library course (which everyone is enrolled in) we tend to post announcements saying when an upcoming workshop is coming up. 88 00:15:40.200 --> 00:15:47.790 Jamie Segno: And so, if you want to receive notifications through your email or text message when we post an announcement, you can go into your settings 89 00:15:48.180 --> 00:15:58.890 Jamie Segno: and make these changes. And if you decide that you're not in need of those notifications, you can select "do not send me anything" as well, and you can change it at any time. 90 00:16:00.960 --> 00:16:04.440 Jamie Segno: So again, that was a tip within a tip of a resource. 91 00:16:05.820 --> 00:16:11.010 Jamie Segno: This was just one example to show you what the Linkedin Learning platform looks like. 92 00:16:11.520 --> 00:16:21.510 Jamie Segno: Now, of course, the librarian in me always wants to give a shout out to our ebooks that are available, and you can get to these through a variety of methods. 93 00:16:21.840 --> 00:16:28.260 Jamie Segno: We have our catalog where you can search for a book title or an author, or if you have an ISBN number. 94 00:16:28.560 --> 00:16:35.910 Jamie Segno: I should warn you that we don't usually carry textbooks, but it doesn't hurt to take a look, because sometimes your professors will have 95 00:16:36.330 --> 00:16:44.910 Jamie Segno: supplemental reading that they require, and it might be a book that we have available, so I always recommend taking a look to see if we have it before you go purchase it. 96 00:16:45.780 --> 00:16:57.600 Jamie Segno: You can also access ebooks through the library databases, the same way, we have a category for test prep materials, there's a category for ebooks and you could look in those databases. 97 00:16:58.380 --> 00:17:06.480 Jamie Segno: And then you also want to think about other initiatives that are offered by other institutions, such as OpenStax. 98 00:17:08.010 --> 00:17:30.540 Jamie Segno: This is a textbook that I use in my course that is really valuable and it's where I pull a lot of my tips from so speaking of tips, one of my favorite to talk about is time management and I got this from College Success free through OpenStax. 99 00:17:33.090 --> 00:17:43.770 Jamie Segno: When you're working on your time management skills, I really liked how this particular ebook laid out some strategies for helping with time management skills. 100 00:17:44.430 --> 00:17:53.580 Jamie Segno: There's three approaches that I thought were the most helpful, so I thought I'd mentioned them in our session today. The first one is called the daily top three. 101 00:17:54.270 --> 00:18:00.300 Jamie Segno: And that's where you determine which three things are the most important for you to finish that day. 102 00:18:00.660 --> 00:18:08.460 Jamie Segno: And so you're going to set the goal to complete those three tasks, if you don't complete anything else that day, hopefully, you could get those three done. 103 00:18:09.000 --> 00:18:19.380 Jamie Segno: It's a simple technique, but it's effective because each day, you are finishing tasks and crossing them off your to do list and slowly but surely you're getting things done. 104 00:18:20.040 --> 00:18:36.240 Jamie Segno: And so the nice thing about the top three is that three is not a real overwhelming number, you might have 20 things you need to get done but you could take a look and say okay I'm going to do this, this, and this and then, if you do, on that day it's three things off your list to do. 105 00:18:38.250 --> 00:18:49.440 Jamie Segno: Another technique that they suggest is called the pomodoro technique, and this is based on the old-fashioned kitchen timer that looks like a tomato (so I have a picture of one on the screen). 106 00:18:50.280 --> 00:19:01.980 Jamie Segno: But really any timer would work to use this technique. It looks like a lot of steps, but it's actually pretty simple. You're going to decide on the task that you want to do. 107 00:19:02.490 --> 00:19:13.590 Jamie Segno: And you're going to set your timer for a desired interval, which they recommend 25 minutes. And then for those 25 minutes, you're going to work on that task so you're going to put away distractions 108 00:19:14.550 --> 00:19:23.250 Jamie Segno: like, you know, social media, Netflix, anything like that and you're going to work on that task for 25 minutes until the timer goes off. 109 00:19:23.640 --> 00:19:27.570 Jamie Segno: When the timer goes off, you're going to put a checkmark on a little scrap of paper. 110 00:19:28.470 --> 00:19:41.100 Jamie Segno: And if you have less than four checkmarks, you're going to take a short break like three to five minutes. It is really important to give yourself breaks because it gives you a chance to catch your breath, you could do some breathing exercises. 111 00:19:41.550 --> 00:19:52.680 Jamie Segno: It helps you stay energized and ready to take on the next short segment of working so you'll set your timer again for 25 minutes. 112 00:19:53.250 --> 00:19:56.910 Jamie Segno: And when that timer goes off, you're going to put a checkmark on your paper. 113 00:19:57.480 --> 00:20:13.860 Jamie Segno: If you only have two or three checks, you're going to take a short break, but if you have four checkmarks, you take a longer break this time, usually recommends 15 to 30 minutes. I know, when you have something to do and you're trying to race the clock, it 114 00:20:15.060 --> 00:20:17.100 Jamie Segno: feels like you need to just keep working 115 00:20:18.120 --> 00:20:23.010 Jamie Segno: straight through these breaks, but really the breaks are going to help you 116 00:20:24.450 --> 00:20:32.430 Jamie Segno: kind of relax and make sure that you're retaining what you're working on, and then you can move on, so you want to make sure you give yourselves those breaks. 117 00:20:32.970 --> 00:20:42.450 Jamie Segno: And you can go for a walk, stretch your legs, something that's going to make you ready to tackle that task again for the next 25 minute interval. 118 00:20:43.380 --> 00:20:53.100 Jamie Segno: You want to continue this process until the task is completed and then again, as I mentioned the breaks help reduce that mental fatigue and increase productivity. 119 00:20:53.850 --> 00:21:01.320 Jamie Segno: So working on a task for 25 minutes at a time is more manageable than working for a larger block of time because if you're 120 00:21:02.130 --> 00:21:18.630 Jamie Segno: looking at something that's like going to take four hours it's so daunting and it's so hard to even want to, you know, get started doing it, but if you say, "okay I'm going to do 25 minutes, I could crank that out easy-peasy," it'll fly by much quicker. 121 00:21:20.460 --> 00:21:29.160 Jamie Segno: And then the third time management tip that the ebook discusses is an approach called eat the frog. 122 00:21:29.730 --> 00:21:38.160 Jamie Segno: They say the title of this approach comes from a Mark Twain saying "eat a live frog first thing in the morning and nothing worse will happen to you the rest of the day." 123 00:21:38.940 --> 00:21:44.190 Jamie Segno: So essentially what this strategy is saying, if you do the biggest or most unpleasant task first, 124 00:21:44.490 --> 00:21:58.530 Jamie Segno: then everything else will be easier afterwards. So, if you tackle that thing that you're dreading and you just get it over with, then the rest of the day you're going to feel a lot lighter because you know that you got that completed and you no longer have to worry about it. 125 00:21:59.610 --> 00:22:07.650 Jamie Segno: So this process helps eliminate that anxious feeling that can impact your performance and it increases productivity. 126 00:22:08.400 --> 00:22:18.810 Jamie Segno: So, you're not distracted or anxious about that task that you're thinking about and dreading, and it also gives you that sense of accomplishment and relief. 127 00:22:19.170 --> 00:22:22.950 Jamie Segno: And so that makes the subsequent tasks seem less difficult to complete. 128 00:22:23.580 --> 00:22:37.260 Jamie Segno: So those are three of the time management strategies that I like to share and I took that from our textbook that we use, which is freely available through OpenStax and I will share these PowerPoint slides, along with the recording, so that you'll have the links as well. 129 00:22:39.180 --> 00:22:50.880 Jamie Segno: I'm moving out from the library's resources because I could talk about the library all day, obviously, but I do want to mention that there are other really great centers on campus to help you out. 130 00:22:51.930 --> 00:23:01.380 Jamie Segno: The NSU Tutoring and Testing Center is definitely one of them. I believe that their office for appointments is only available to Nova students. 131 00:23:01.770 --> 00:23:14.910 Jamie Segno: But they have a lot of resources on their website that are really useful and they record a lot of their workshops, so if you're not an NSU student that can attend it live you, could definitely go in and watch the recordings. 132 00:23:15.840 --> 00:23:25.890 Jamie Segno: They post a lot of it on their YouTube channel, they have some tools like a weekly time management schedule that you can use (and that kind of goes back to that master calendar that we talked about). 133 00:23:26.490 --> 00:23:32.400 Jamie Segno: They have study tips on Pinterest; they even have a Buzzfeed quiz to see what type of student you are. 134 00:23:33.210 --> 00:23:40.980 Jamie Segno: I, of course, like they're recorded workshops - their personal productivity hacks is one of my favorites; it's one that I definitely show my students when I'm 135 00:23:41.790 --> 00:23:55.440 Jamie Segno: with them in the classroom. This is a prioritization tool that they feature in that particular workshop and it's also mentioned in the OpenStax College Success ebook. 136 00:23:56.040 --> 00:24:07.590 Jamie Segno: So if you're not familiar with this tool it's sometimes called Covey's quadrant or the time management matrix and it's a pretty simple tool to use. You're going to make an 137 00:24:08.700 --> 00:24:19.590 Jamie Segno: X on your page and you're going to essentially create these four quadrants and in the top column you're going to write urgent or not urgent. 138 00:24:20.250 --> 00:24:24.180 Jamie Segno: And then on the row, you're going to write important or not important. 139 00:24:24.780 --> 00:24:35.010 Jamie Segno: And then you're going to classify the things on your to do list into one of these categories, so if it's urgent and important, you need to put it in that upper left quadrant. 140 00:24:35.310 --> 00:24:41.910 Jamie Segno: So here we see an example of a paper due that's urgent because it's due tomorrow and it's important because it's part of your grade. 141 00:24:43.080 --> 00:24:56.100 Jamie Segno: Next to it, we have not urgent but it's important, so we have something like an exam next week. It's obviously not as urgent as the paper that's due tomorrow but it's still very important, so you got to put it up there. 142 00:24:56.970 --> 00:25:13.500 Jamie Segno: And then on the bottom row you have urgent, but not important and so examples could maybe include like a sale - it's urgent because the sale is going to end soon, but it's not important, because you can spend hours doing some online shopping when you really need to be writing that paper. 143 00:25:14.910 --> 00:25:23.460 Jamie Segno: And then you have finally not urgent and not important, and these are the things that go to the bottom of the list (it's usually the things we want to do the most). 144 00:25:23.910 --> 00:25:32.790 Jamie Segno: But because they're in this not urgent, not important category, we're going to do them last like checking our social media, watching a TV show, things like that. 145 00:25:33.150 --> 00:25:44.160 Jamie Segno: And you basically want to make sure that you start with your urgent and important tasks - get those done, then you move into urgent, but not important because 146 00:25:45.630 --> 00:25:47.640 Jamie Segno: those are 147 00:25:49.200 --> 00:26:06.540 Jamie Segno: important but they weren't as urgent as the first group. And then you want to go into your urgent things but they're not important so when it comes to like getting an assignment due or getting a paper or report in at work, you want to focus on important stuff first. 148 00:26:08.520 --> 00:26:18.270 Jamie Segno: And so I kind of find that this is a helpful tool; instead of having just a long list of things, categorizing it helps me realize which ones I need to prioritize. 149 00:26:20.310 --> 00:26:23.550 Jamie Segno: Oh, I apologize these links are not showing up in 150 00:26:24.780 --> 00:26:40.710 Jamie Segno: a font that we can read so i'll fix that when I post our session recording, but I just wanted to mention that there are resources to also focus on health and wellness like NSU cares and the NSU health clinics. 151 00:26:42.030 --> 00:26:55.650 Jamie Segno: The links to these two areas go to the web pages, which offer resources not just for NSU students, but the community as well. All kinds of different resources to help them focus on their health and wellness. 152 00:26:56.520 --> 00:27:11.670 Jamie Segno: A lot of our studying is going to be successful if we're taking care of ourselves, and it could be anything from making sure you're going and getting your doctor visits, or if you're not feeling well going to one of the clinics 153 00:27:13.290 --> 00:27:17.790 Jamie Segno: to focusing on your mental health, where there's counseling services. 154 00:27:19.230 --> 00:27:27.630 Jamie Segno: And then it could be anything in between like making sure that you go for a walk a day getting some physical activity if you've been sitting in the same post studying for a long time. 155 00:27:27.900 --> 00:27:36.270 Jamie Segno: And things like that. A lot of people don't always think about keeping an eye on their health and wellness to help them succeed. 156 00:27:37.020 --> 00:27:51.570 Jamie Segno: But it does really play an important role. Sleep is very important - there's a lot of research studies out there that show getting enough sleep, a good night's rest before an exam is going to help you do better 157 00:27:52.020 --> 00:28:00.720 Jamie Segno: than pulling an all-nighter trying to cram in all the information so keep that in mind as some of your tips for success. 158 00:28:01.830 --> 00:28:07.260 Jamie Segno: We're pretty much reaching our time but I'll stay on if anyone has any questions. 159 00:28:07.680 --> 00:28:17.730 Jamie Segno: Of course, I like to give a shout out to our Librarians that are available to help you locate any of the resources that we talked about today, if you've forgotten some of the things that I've mentioned. 160 00:28:18.420 --> 00:28:30.990 Jamie Segno: And then, as I also said at the beginning, we do post our workshop recordings online. The website is on the library's homepage if you go to workshops and then you'll see the link to the recordings. 161 00:28:31.380 --> 00:28:38.670 Jamie Segno: We usually post them within a week of the live session. 162 00:28:40.050 --> 00:28:42.420 Jamie Segno: Alvin Sherman library just to point out. 163 00:28:43.590 --> 00:29:01.140 Jamie Segno: When you go to the homepage you'll see in the help section there's a link to the workshops right there and so you'll see the upcoming ones first and then on the side if you click on recordings you'll see the different sessions listed, so that you could rewatch them at any time. 164 00:29:02.820 --> 00:29:09.900 Jamie Segno: So I apologize it went all the way to the end, but if you have any questions I don't mean to rush anyone, please let me know. 165 00:29:11.580 --> 00:29:15.090 Jamie Segno: i'll go ahead and stop our recording.
