Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explore the experiences of African American’s from disadvantaged backgrounds who successfully earned their respective college degrees from state universities in Florida. First generation college graduates from various disciplines were interviewed to understand what attributed to their academic completion. The interview consisted of 15 open ended semi-structured questions to garner data. African American’s from disadvantaged backgrounds has been challenged with being largely marginalized and underrepresented among college graduates. However despite their predisposition from low socioeconomic backgrounds entering predominately white institutions they have managed triumph.
