Book review of Writing Rumba,The Afrocubanista Movement in Poetry by Miguel Arnedo Gomez

Yvette Fuentes, Nova Southeastern University

Abstract

According to the author, when discussing images of the black woman, literary critics have most often emphasized the author's ideology rather than view these images as forming a part of Afro-Cuban reality. According to the author, whites viewed the rumba as a sexual expression, unaware that elements in the dance were actually tied to Afro-Cuban religious rituals and practices.
