Dr. Hamstra has over 25 years of experience as an educational leader spanning grades Pre-Kindergarten through Graduate Medical Education. Prior to joining NSU-COM she taught educational leadership courses at FAU. She has presented at local, state and national conferences on educational leadership, including at the National Association of Secondary School Principals Annual Conference.

Abstract

OBJECTIVES: This session will explore characteristics of successful leaders and offer opportunity for attendees to examine their personal leadership knowledge, beliefs and traits.

TEACHING METHODS: This session will begin with an overview presentation of leadership characteristics followed by self-awareness inventories/questionnaires for attendees to complete and discuss. There will be time for questions and open discussion.

CONTENT OVERVIEW: The content of this workshop will include: identifying what comes firstas a leader, ethical decision making, communication climate, conflict handling modes and leadership styles.

PROJECT IMPACT: It is anticipated that the participants of this workshop will leave with a desire to continue personal reflection and analysis of their own leadership traits and styles.
